Ariel V observations of IC 443 in the energy range from 1.1 to 7.5 keV are presented. The data permit the spectral parameters of this source to be more tightly constrained than in previous observations and provide information on the location of the emitting regions. No evidence for iron line emission at 6.7 keV is found. A source model is presented in which the initial explosion expands into a density gradient in the northeastern direction. This model consistently explains the observational properties of the remnant and predicts an age of 12,700 yr.
