It is proposed that there is an important relationship between the metallicity of an elliptical galaxy and its density. A roughly linear correlation is found between B-H color and the effective blue surface brightness in elliptical galaxies. Good linear relations between Mg2 and H absolute magnitude are also observed. It is suggested that gas flows or star formation regulation may be responsible for the physical link between metallicity and density in galaxies.
