A classification scheme is described for a sample of supernovae (SNe). Progress in the spectral observations of various types of SNe is reported. The discoveries of two peculiar SN Ia - SN 1991T and SN 1991bg challenged the reliability of the homogeneity of the Type Ia class. Particular attention should be paid to the sample of Type Ib/Ic SNe. The evolution from Type II SNe at maximum light to Type Ib/Ic SNe at later times for SN 1993J and SN 1987K raised questions on the traditional Type I-Type II differentiation. A new subclass of "Type IIn" may be needed for the Type II SNe showing peculiar Hα profiles, with narrow peaks siting on broad emission bases. A Hubble constant of H0 = 80(+17,-15) km s-1Mpc-1 is obtained from observations of the distant Type II SN 1992am.
