Two models for emission-line formation in Mira-type long-period variables are examined: emission behind a shock front and chromospheric heating due to dissipation of acoustic and MHD waves. Calculations are performed which show that the shock-wave model encounters three specific difficulties and that the hypothesis of chromospheric heating by waves generated beneath the photosphere is inapplicable to Miras. A model is proposed whereby hydrogen emission lines originate in hot spots formed by the reconnection of oppositely directed magnetic-field lines in regions above the photosphere. It is found that both the absolute intensity of emission lines and their variation with a characteristic time scale of several days can be explained in the framework of this model.
