In recent years cosmic ray physics experienced a renaissance, due to exciting new discoveries (e.g. point sources like Cygnus X-3 in the UHE-region). In order to increase our present knowledge in this wide complex of questions, the new air shower experiment KASCADE (KArlsruhe Shower Core and Array DEtector) has been set up at the site of the Forschungszentrums Karlsruhe. The most important aims are to answer questions about the energy spectra and the chemical composition of cosmic rays in the energy range between 3×1014 - 1017eV. Another important aspect is the investigation of high energetic γ-radiation with special emphasis on the search for point sources. Therefore KASCADE will measure extensive air showers, initiated by primary cosmic ray particles in the Earth's atmosphere. For this it is most important to measure a large number of shower parameters simultaneously. In order to carry out this task the KASCADE-experiment consists of a widespread detector array measuring the lateral distribution and the time of arrival of the shower front of the electromagnetic component. An additional large tracking detector measures the muon component and a central calorimeter measures hadrons and muons near the shower's core.
