The improvements in spectral resolution and sensitivity in soft X-rays detection by NASA's Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF) and ESA's X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission (XMM) are underlined. Spectral simulations with 0.05A resolution are performed to investigate the diagnostic capabilities of the XMM reflection grating spectrometer for Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) spectra. Observations of resolved emission lines and absorption edges in soft X-rays allow a better interpretation of the origins of the different spectral components.
