The systematic variability properties of BL Lac objects at ultraviolet and X-ray frequencies are considered. A theoretical model, based on the propagation of a perturbation along a relativistic jet can account for the observed spectral hardening with increasing intensity in the X-ray band. The observed variability amplitude is predicted to depend on the angle of view.
