Implications of the Viking search for life on Mars are discussed. The two spacecraft will land at sites selected for the potential availability of organic food molecules and water, and a series of experiments designed to detect photosynthetic organisms and heterotrophs utilizing a wide range of food sources will be performed. The presence of life based on the same set of amino acids as that incorporated by terrestrial organisms would indicate the presence of significant thermodynamic or other advantages in the 20 amino acids utilized. The existence of life forms utilizing a different group of amino acids would provide a confirmation of current theories regarding the spontaneous chemical evolution of bio-organic molecules.
