A star terminates its development as white dwarf, neutron star, or black hole. The stellar mass and the angular momentum determine which of the three possible stages will be reached in a specific case. The characteristics of white dwarfs are examined, taking into account their composition, brightness, mass, and temperature. A classification of white dwarfs is based on their spectra. The various stages of the development of a star to a white dwarf are considered together with the types of nuclear reactions which take place. Attention is also given to details concerning the cooling process which occurs after the star has reached the white dwarf stage.
