Scientific paper
Review article on recent findings in astronomy (all wavelengths), with emphasis on astronomical progress facilitated by space technology. Observations taken free of the disturbing effects of the earth's atmosphere at infrared, visual, ultraviolet, and X-ray wavelengths, and close-up observations of other bodies in the solar system, are described. Contributions made by the flights of the Mariner, Venera, Viking, Uhuru, ESRO TD-1A, OSO-3, SAS-2, COS-B, Ranger, Surveyor, Luna, and Lunar Orbiter series of satellites and deep space probes are mentioned, and future plans for the IFAS (Netherlands infrared astronomical satellite) and Space Shuttle are indicated.
