Alkali Suite, Basalt: Kreep, Cumulates: Highland, Ion Probe, Magnesian Suite

The evolution of the lunar highlands crust involved two distinct stages: (1) the formation of anorthositic to leuconoritic crust as flotation cumulates (FANs) from an incipient lunar magma ocean ~4.4-4.5 Ga ago; and (2) the modification of this early crust from 4.4 to 3.9 Ga through the crystallization of mafic and ultramafic plutonic rocks (and occasional, minor felsic rocks). The petrogenesis of these later mafic and ultramafic plutonic rocks has been the subject of intense debate. We present ion probe trace-element data on both individual pyroxene and plagioclase grains from these post-magma ocean highlands rocks. Parental liquids were calculated from these analyses and are similar in composition to differentiating KREEP basalts.
