The nature of a strong outburst of the Be/X ray binary A0535+26/HDE 245770 which occurred in 1980 and not in phase with the orbital period is investigated. This activity is interpreted in terms of enhanced mass loss from the optical counterpart. The X ray emission is studied in terms of direct accretion from the equatorial wind of the optical star. The wind velocity profile and the wind density distribution are derived. The resulting mass loss rate is in agreement with the observed X ray luminosity.
