The role of the deceleration term in observational cosmology is examined. It is shown that, since the average mass density must be regarded as indeterminate, the deceleration term plays a subordinate role, and the third time derivative of the scaling variable is of more fundamental importance. When general relativity is assumed to be valid on cosmic scales, the verification of the open or closed nature of the Universe, the value of the cosmological term, and the existence of missing mass is dependent on this dimensionless third time derivative. Reasons for rejecting or maintaining the cosmological term are considered.
