The article considers the questions of how typical the solar system is and whether the enormous number of G-type dwarfs in the Galaxy might all be accompanied by planetary systems similar to the sun's. The distribution of specific angular momentum in the solar system is described, the role of supernovae in star formation and in the existence of planetary systems is examined, and difficulties in models of solar-nebula collapse are noted. It is shown that observations of T Tauri stars have not indicated whether these objects might have produced planets. Prospects for observing cometary and meteoritic material around other stars and for directly detecting other planetary systems are evaluated. It is concluded that there is presently no solid scientific support for the position that the Universe is teeming with planetary systems like our own.
