The model of Joyce and Speer (1987) [2] for the large-scale influence of a geothermal heat source in an ocean basin is applied to the South Pacific, taking into account observed isopycnal depth variations and tracer distributions. These observations are used with the model to estimate the required geothermal heating and strength of the background Stommel and Arons flow. Both heating and background flow are necessary in the model for agreement with observations.
