Closed system melting and certain requirements of the theory of mascons lead to the inclusion that there is a basalt-rich shell below the outer anorthositic shell. Other evidence leads to the conclusion that the moon possesses a small iron core. Thus, differentiation of the whole moon seems to have occurred early in lunar history and is consistent with the evidence for thermal convection having occurred throughout lunar history. The heat source required to melt the moon in its early history is an obscure matter but was possibly short-lived radioactive isotopes.
