Wind action is one of the most active geomorphic processes presently at work on Mars. Dust devils appear to play a considerable role in the redistribution of fine particulates and have been cited as a likely trigger for the great dust storms that sweep that planet. On-going terrestrial analog studies conducted in southern Nevada have examined the surface conditions and aerodynamic properties which permit the formation of dust devils. This leads to certain expectations of the ground conditions to be found where Martian dust devils have been imaged (and other areas that act as dust sources, by implication of the freeconvection model for Dianet-encirclina dust storms.
