Analysis of Voyager images has led to a broad understanding of several aspects of the geology of Ganymede but there is considerable uncertainty about the nature, formation, and evolution of the dark terrain, which comprises about 50% of the surface of the planet. Here we examine the major issues, focus on specific questions that need to be resolved, and highlight areas under study and targeted by the Galileo Solid State Imaging System to help resolve these issues.
