The first detailed numerical computations of the turn-on involving full stellar models for the mass-losing stars in cataclysmic binaries (CBs) are presented. The estimate of the time scale on which mass transfer turns on is verified, and it is confirmed that double-polytrope evolutionary codes can adequately model the longer-term evolution of CBs and structurally similar systems. Except for relatively short turn-on phases, the mass transfer rate can be adequately computed by using the usual boundary conditions implying a sharp stellar rim.
