Models are investigated in order to understand the observed enrichment of elements with a low first ionization potential in the solar wind and in the solar energetic particle population. The fractionation is achieved by ion-atom separation across magnetic field lines in the upper chromosphere. An initially neutral gas mixture is driven across the field by a density gradient and by gravity. At the same time the gas is also being ionized, predominantly by the solar ultraviolet radiation, and the ions are trapped by the field. Remarkable agreement is found between observed abundances and model predictions in the case of slab structures with a width of less than about 10 km.
