Different methods for calibrating absolute magnitudes of G and K giants give inconsistent results. An attempt is made to constrain this calibration using the galactic population synthesis model. It is shown that using alternatively these different calibrations as inputs in a synthetic model of galactic population produces quite different predictions which can be compared to observed general star counts in BV photometry as well as to counts in selected giant samples. It is shown that the present determination is made partly independently of the assumed ages using data in the galactic plane.
