The maximum redshift attainable from the surface of a static spherical body (solid or shell) is studied. If the pressures arise from the kinetic energy of the massive constituent particles, then all pressures and the trace of the energy tensor are non-negative. In this case it is shown that the limit is 1+z=3, provided anisotropic pressures are admitted. Examples are presented of allowing larger pressures. Arguments are given to show that spherical symmetry permits higher values than any other shape. If one permits negative pressures, as exemplified by electrostatic stresses, then the result of Bonnor & Wickramasuriya that there is no such limit is recovered (under wider conditions).
