A recent initiative of the Manned Spaceflight and Microgravity Directorate of the European Space Agency was concerned with the identification of specific objectives in the search for life on Mars. The Exobiology Science Team consisted of experts in the fields of radiation biology, planetary geology, geochemistry, mineralogy, meteorology, and exobiology. The Science Team study emphasized present European capabilities in the areas of drilling, sample acquisition, and preparation, and in situ analysis.
