The International ROSETTA mission to comet P/Wirtanen is being planned by ESA for a launch in January 2003. It consists of an orbiter spacecraft that will rendezvous with the comet in 2011 and two surface probes to be landed in 2012 on the surface of the comet where in situ experiments will be carried out. One of these, called CHAMPOLLION, is being proposed by NASA and CNES; the prime objective of the lander is to characterize the composition of the comet nucleus material. To meet this objective, a gamma-ray spectrometer (GRS) for a CHAMPOLLION Analysis of Gamma-ray emissions from comet Nucleus Elements (CHAMPAGNE experiment) has been preselected for implementation on the CNES/NASA ROSETTA lander CHAMPOLLION. The major goal of the investigation is to measure the energy spectrum of the gamma-ray emissions of the surface material with high accuracy and reliability in order to determine the elemental composition of a comet nucleus. This GRS investigation aims at testing models of comet formation in the early solar system and at comparing the comet with other primitive bodies like known meteorites.
