Magnetic records on quiet conditions obtained at two mid-latitude stations for the years 1987 and 1988 were analysed for the hourly H-field amplitude variation. The non-cyclic variation was corrected for the disturbance field effect, removed by the differencing technique of Butcher & Schlapp (1992). The amplitude of H has a diurnal variation which peaks during the day at about local noon. Nighttime variation is also observed which may be accounted for by using connective drift of distant currents. The defined seasonal variation is attributed to the seasonal variation of Sq foci and the variability of lunar semi-diurnal tides.
