Dust extinction in Sb galaxies is investigated by using the variation of disc scalelength with inclination angle. For a sample of 15 Sb galaxies, disc scalelengths rD in B and I are measured from surface brightness profiles. The ratios rD(B) /rD(I) show a systematic increase with increasing inclination angle i. For face-on galaxies, rD(B) /rD(I) = 1.0, whereas for edge-on galaxies, rD(B) /r D(I) = 1.5. This confirms the presence of significant colour gradients in galaxy discs. The data are compared to scalelengths derived from simulated galaxy images which are obtained by adopting volume emissivity distributions for the bulge and the luminous disc and the spatial distribution of the extinction coefficient for the absorbing dust disc. In order to include the effect of intrinsic population gradients, the radial scalelength of the luminous disc is assumed to be larger by 14% for B than for I. Model images are calculated for different optical depths with scattering taken into account. The largest variation of rD(B) / rD(I) with i is found for a central face-on optical depth in the B band of 0.5, where rD(B) / rD(I) increase from 1.15 for i = 0̂ to 1.25 for i = 85̂. This is still smaller than the increase measured for the sample galaxies, which indicates that the observed variation of the scalelength ratio with inclination angle is probably not caused by dust only.
