Very deep V and I images of the outermost S-W disk of M31 and of the southern half of M33 have been obtained with the 8k CCD camera of the CFHT (field 28' x 28') under excellent seeing. Separation of stars and galaxies has been made using SEXTRACTOR. Deep HR diagrams have been obtained for the disk and halo populations of both galaxies. The unexpected presence of blue main-sequence stars at 24 kpc from the center of M31 shows that star formation is still active there. From a statistical study of the V--I colors of the background galaxies seen through the disks, it is possible to map extinction and study its correlation with the distribution of neutral hydrogen, deriving the dust-to-gas ratio.
