Anomalous Cepheids have been found in all dwarf spheroidal galaxies. They are believed to be the end-product of a binary star coalescence, with masses about twice the turn-off mass of an old stellar system, i.e. M ˜1.5 Modot. We will report the results of a search for anomalous Cepheids in the Fornax dwarf galaxy. This search has been motivated by the fact that ``massive'' anomalous Cepheids (M ˜2.5 to 3Modot) could have been found in the Large Magellanic Cloud (Bersier et al., in press), and could also exist in Fornax. Furthermore, Fornax had never been searched thoroughly for anomalous Cepheids before. This galaxy provides a test for the binary merger scenario explaining the formation of these stars. We have surveyed an area 0.5 square degrees wide, using the camera employed by the MACHO experiment, installed on a 1.3-m telescope at Mt Stromlo. We have also acquired photometric data on a 1-m telescope. We will describe our observing strategy and search for variable stars. We will present the results and comment upon the relation between the specific frequency of anomalous Cepheids and luminosity of parent galaxy.
