Local Group galaxies are particularly important in establishing distance scales since they allow us to compare a number of different distance indicators with one another. The present review will concentrate on this aspect of the problem. Discussion will be centred mainly on the two Magellanic Clouds, M31 and its satellites and our own Galaxy, but some additional galaxies will also be included especially for a comparison of Cepheid and RGB-tip distances. Possible explanations of the discrepancies between different scales suggested in recent times will be examined.
