The human mission to Mars will require innovative technology advances in autonomous control, hazardous avoidance, habitats, environmental protection and in situ resource utilization. As an example of the technological advances which have been achieved this presentation reports on an optical pattern recognition system that has been developed which can perform ultrahigh throughput pattern recognition. This system can act as an automatic lesion detection system as well as various defense defense applications.
