M98 is a spiral galaxy in southern Coma Berenices, just 0.5 degrees from the fifth-magnitude star 6 Comae Berenices. It was a Mechain discovery, in March 1781. M98 is a spiral galaxy of intermediate type lying nearly edge-on to us, as a result of which it appears extremely elongated in shape, about four times longer than it is wide.
