M76 is a planetary nebula in Perseus, often called the `LITTLE DUMBBELL NEBULA' (or the `Cork' or `Butterfly' Nebula). It was assigned two NGC numbers since it was originally thought to be two distinct objects. Like most nebulae, it has a very ill-defined distance: estimates range from 1700 to 15 000 light-years.
