The `Sunflower' spiral galaxy M63 in Canes Venatici was discovered by Messier's collaborator Pierre Mechain, on 14 June 1779. It is in a physical group with M51 and several smaller galaxies and represents the archetypical example of the class of galaxies known as `flocculent spirals'.
