M16 is an open cluster in the constellation Serpens, associated with the
EAGLE NEBULA (1 degree north and 2.5 degrees west of γ Scuti). It
was discovered by de Chéseaux in 1746 as a `cluster of stars' and
sits on the next inner spiral arm of the galaxy away from us next to
M17....
