Theoretically calculated spectra of SO and published experimental data on SO2 are compared with IUE spectra of comets passing within 0.25 AU of the earth to set upper limits on the cometary abundances of these compounds and impose constraints on comet models. The results are presented in tables and sample spectra and discussed in detail. No evidence for SO is found in Comets Halley and IRAS-Araki-Alcock (N less than 1.2 x 10 to the 12th and 9 x 10 to the 10th/sq cm, respectively), and the SO and SO2 production rates are shown to be 50 or more times smaller than the respective S2 rates, suggesting that S2 is produced by a mechanism other than that studied in recent laboratory simulations (e.g., Grim and Greenberg, 1987).
