Formation Of Stars-Bipolar Jets-K-H Instability

Scientific paper

We use the magnetic de Laval nozzle to explain the formation of bipolar jets: the thermal pressure inside the jet is balanced by the magnetic pressure of the longitudinal field outside. We study the Kelvin-Helaholtz instability of this equilibrium base state and derive an analytic solution for the resonant modes. This family of solutions can explain many of the observed features of the knotty structure of the jets, including the spacing between the knots, the high motion and the optical invisibility during the expanding portion of the jet.
