Absorption of TeV gamma rays by pair production on the infrared extragalactic background light (EBL) (γ_TeV γ_IR → e^+e^-) provides one of the best ways of probing the near-IR background. This in turn can provide constraints on the history of star formation in the universe, especially when the EBL is calculated on the basis of physical models of galaxy formation including the effects of hydrodynamics, stellar population models, supernova feedback, and dust extinction. This talk will review previous estimates and calculations of the EBL and the corresponding predicted absorption of TeV gamma rays, and present new calculations based on semi-analytic modelling of galaxy formation. These will be compared to new data on TeV spectra of AGNs. Other data relevant to the history of star formation will also be discussed, including both optical and far-IR observations of high-redshift galaxies.
