The 'Superantennae' (IRAS 19254-7245) is an extragalactic system with colossal tails stretching to an unprecedented total extent of 350 kpc. The tails emanate from a merger of giant gas-rich galaxies that harbor two nuclei (one Seyfert, one starburst) separated by 10 kpc. Toward the galactic disk with the Seyfert nucleus, systems of optical emission and absorption lines are detected whose radial velocities spread over a range of 1000 km/sec. More than 80 percent of the energy radiated by this powerful far-infrared system originates in the deeply obscured Seyfert component. The blue colors of an object found at the tip of the southern tail suggest that, out of the debris of the collision, star formation is taking place 200 kpc from the merging nuclei.
