Given that the emergence of life is impossible without the nucleosynthesis of the light elements out of free nucleons, the changes in the coupling constants of the nuclear force needed to unbind the deuteron and to bind the di-proton are investigated. Unlike earlier studies, a realistic force with short-range repulsion and long-range attraction is used. Cancellation between these two parts leads to an increased sensitivity for the unbinding of the deuteron, but is found to have no effect on the binding of the di-proton. Modifying the force so that the deuteron becomes unbound leads to H-3 and He-3 being almost unbound.
