Mirrors: Thermal Stability

Scientific paper

Both mirror seeing and thermal figure distortion are eliminated in 8m borosilicate honeycomb mirrors if the reflecting surface is held within 0°2 C of ambient air temperature, and the glass is isothermal to within 0°1 C. Under the normal changes of temperature at the telescope this can be achieved by forced ventilation with air at ambient temperature. Laboratory experiments show that air jets, directed from below through into each honeycomb cell, will transfer heat at the required rates.
