The authors describe the principles of polishing large fast aspheric mirrors with a lap that changes its shape continuously to match the mirror surface. Through the application of bending and twisting moments at the edge of the lap, a rigid lap as large as one-third the mirror diameter can be made to maintain a sufficiently accurate fit to an f/1 paraboloid at any position. The authors describe the first application of this stressed-lap method of polishing, using a 2-m computer-controlled polishing machine with a 60-cm stressed lap to polish a 1.8-m f/1 paraboloid.
