The overwhelming requirement for telescope mirrors is stability. The long term stability (warping) is mainly a problem for metals and not so much for glassy materials. In the short term, the mirror is kept stable better if it is stiff and if it is not susceptible to be affected by temperature changes. Since a large mirror cannot be stiff enough to be supported on only a few points, a multi-point complex support system has to be used. It is always possible to trade of mirror stiffness against support stiffness, hance many different solutions.
