Various problems encountered in identifying molecular lines in the rich spectra of cool carbon and related stars are considered. Special attention is given to the FeH, ZrS, and CN molecules. Following a review of the principles of identifying stellar lines, recent successful identifications are discussed that illustrate the wide range in the incompleteness of the laboratory spectroscopy.
