The history of the cosmological constant is reviewed, discussing applications of the concept in modern quantum field and gauge field theories. The ability of the big bounce concept to provide solutions to cosmological problems as an alternative to the big bang is considered. The status of the Friedmann-Lemaitre cosmos in present-day theory and with regard to the big bounce concept is discussed.
