If the activity in galactic nuclei derives from accretion onto a massive black hole, the Eddington ratio - i.e., the adimensional L/M - constitutes a good indicator for the effective duration of the activity in each single object; its average value is related to the numbers of galaxies involved. The authors discuss how the forthcoming measurements of nuclear masses in active and inactive galaxies can tell apart the three basic activity patterns.
