Correlations of line widths with the ionization potential chi and with the critical density for collisional de-excitation, Nc, for the most indicative oxygen lines have been derived through the analysis of some physical processes involved in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). A hydrodynamical regime is considered. The results of previous calculations using composite models of line intensities and profiles have been used. These models account for the coupled effects of the radiation flux from the active center, F0, and of shock wave hydrodynamics. This analysis suggests that chi, Nc, and F0 are strongly intermingled, so that a general correlation of line widths with one of them is valid only on large scales. Moreover, the calculated dependence of line widths on Nc compared with observational data provides a correlation of the velocity field with gas preshock actual densities in an 'extended' narrow-line region (NLR) of single AGNs.
