Time variations in the secondary cosmic ray flux may be attributed to two broad categories of effects: actual variations in the primary cosmic ray flux and variations induced by changing conditions in the atmosphere. Mathematical simulations were developed to investigate the effects of changes in surface temperature and pressure upon a differential spectrum of muons with energies distributed about a muon energy of 400 MeV. The simulations involved considerable modelling of the atmosphere as well as modelling of the production and propagation of the secondary muons. From the response of the simulation to changes in surface temperature and surface pressure, co-efficients of temperature and pressure effects were determined. (Modified author abstract)
