A procedure for calculating the solar energy incident on flat plates of different orientations is given in detail. The use of latitude, declination, and time to find the azimuth and zenith angle of the sun is explained. A convenient and quantitative description of how the attenuation of the sun's rays varies with zenith angle is described. The results of sample calculations for latitude 32 deg N at the time of the solstices and equinoxes are presented. Finally, reference data and a listing of a short computer program are included.
