New spectroscopic observations of a sample of 26 AGN have been obtained with the 1.5-m ESO telescope, and broad line parameters and bolometric luminosities have been derived for 34 Seyfert 1 galaxies and 24 low-redshift quasars. It is found that local AGN radiate at about 1/5 of the Eddington luminosity. The results suggest that the whole broad-line flux falls onto the central source, providing the fuel for the AGN production.
