A model in which the emitting region consists of very thick shells heated by a hard X-ray continuum extending up to a few hundred keV is proposd to solve the Fe II problem in AGN. It is shown that the emergent fluxes in the Fe II optical multiplets in the Balmer and Paschen lines are increased with respect to their values in the standard model. Although the present model solves the Fe II problem for most AGN, it does not solve the problem for intense Fe II emitters.
